KaLex Construction Project Update

Here is an update on the construction and renovation project at Kendal at Lexington.  The project consists of 6 sub-projects . . .

  • IL Cottages:  All 30 cottages are now under roof and 5 new families have moved in!  We anticipate that 22 of the 30 residences will be occupied by the end of 2019.

  • Emergency access road:  The road has been constructed.  One additional layer of surface and some landscaping will complete that part of the project.  A gate has been installed at the Rebel Ridge Road entrance to prohibit unauthorized use of the road.

  • Borden Health Center:  Construction of the two additions is getting very close to completion and the renovations of the current structure are in “full swing.”

  • Webster Center Assisted Living:  The construction of the addition is behind schedule but making progress.

  • Maintenance Building: Construction underway.

  • Dining Facility:  The foundation and roof skeleton for the expansion of the dining room is almost complete.  Construction of the walls to close in the new space and interior renovation of the existing space are underway.

Thank you for your patience throughout this work.   We anticipate that the full project will be completed in the spring of 2020.  With the all the cottages under roof and all the utility work having been completed, we do not anticipate any additional blasting.  We do, however, want you to be aware that there is additional paving work to be completed.  Also, final grading and conversion of the sediment ponds to detention ponds will occur towards the end of the project.

Work begins on emergency egress road at Kendal

Preliminary preparation for the construction for the emergency egress road off of Rebel Ridge will begin this week. Some of the areas will be fenced off.  For your safety, please do not go into the fenced areas.  These are part of the construction and will be limited to authorized personnel only.

Thank you for your patience.  We expect this to be completed within a month, weather permitting.

Work begins on emergency exit road

Now that the weather has improved, things are going at full-swing on the construction and renovation project.  We all look forward to completion!

Part of the next phase of the project includes beginning work on the emergency exit road.  To accomplish this, we will be required to fence off that area.  We regret any inconvenience, but please be assured that once it is safe again, the fence will disappear and everyone will be welcome.  We ask your cooperation to please respect the posted areas for no trespassing.  They are marked off for everyone’s safety.

Thank you again for your understanding and patience.

Blasting on March 6 and 7

There will be two blasts on March 6 and two on March 7, at approximately 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. each day.  This work will be done at the Rebel Ridge end of the loop road, and the 300' blast area is all on Kendal property.

Construction progress report

Construction and renovations are progressing at Kendal.  Renovations at the Borden Center have been completed in one hall and crews are working on the second one, and construction of the additions for the new spaces at the nursing home is well underway.

Simultaneously, renovations of the Webster Center are proceeding, and construction of the new cottages is moving ahead.  It's a busy place!

We have been informed by our contractors that minimal blasting may be needed next week, probably towards the middle of the week.  This work will be conducted on the loop road, towards the Rebel Ridge end of the loop.

Additional information will be forwarded as soon as it becomes available.

Blasting on Friday, February 1

We anticipate that there will be blasting at 11:00 a.m.,  1:00 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. on Friday, February 1.  The work will be conducted in the same area as Monday's blasts.

Emails and texts will be sent Friday morning.

Blasting at Kendal during the week of January 28

We have been fortunate that we have not needed to blast for the last few months.  It has been determined, however, that some additional blasting will be needed at the southeast side of the loop, near Rebel Ridge.  The information provided by the contractor indicates the 300 foot radius does not go past the Kendal property line.

We anticipate that this will be conducted next week, possibly as early as Monday, January 28.  Texts and e-mails with more specific information will be sent as soon as it becomes available.

Because the blasts have been scaled back, and because of the continual delays due to wet weather, the whole process has taken longer than expected.  We appreciate your patience.

Kendal construction progress

Significant progress is being made on the construction/expansion project, despite the heavy precipitation of the last few months.

Four of the new cottages on Sunrise Ridge are under roof, and foundations have been poured for several more.  While completing the installation of the infrastructure, unexpected rock was discovered beneath cottages #24 and #25, adjacent to our Rebel Ridge neighbors' properties.  Our construction manager has informed us that drilling and/or some additional blasting may need to occur during the week of January 14.  Additional information will be communicated as it becomes available.

Storm Update

Kendal at Lexington staff spent this fair weather day conferring with representatives from the City of Lexington, Rockbridge County, Dominion Power, Spectrum engineers, and the Nielsen construction team to evaluate the impact of yesterday’s torrential rains on our construction project.  We have been very fortunate to have experienced limited damage.

We expect that recommendations regarding our storm water management system to be forthcoming and electrical repair work on our campus to occur next week.  We will provide additional information as it becomes available.

Statement of Kendal at Lexington Regarding Flooding Due to Heavy Rain

October 11, 2018
3:00 pm
Due to the unusual amount of rainfall, there has been a breach of water retention mechanisms on Kendal’s construction worksite and water is flowing into some neighboring areas. Kendal at Lexington regrets this situation and is actively working with the City of Lexington, project contractors and engineers to assess and alleviate the issue.
Per requirements, sediment basins are designed to contain 134 cubic yards of water per acre of disturbed area. The water management installations were designed in excess of that requirement.  It is suspected the torrential rains we received today were of an historic nature and exceed expectations.

Kendal at Lexington’s property has been affected as well.  All hands are on deck to address the situation.

Please contact Executive Director Mina Tepper at (540) 463-1910 with questions or concerns.  Updates will be posted on the blog at http://kalexmasterplanupdate.blogspot.com.

Kendal's Construction Update Blog

This blog was created to post photos and updates of the progress on our current expansion and renovation project.  We have discovered that this is not an ideal venue for communicating time sensitive information as it only updates once a day.  Blasting notices will continue to be posted as promised, but please make sure you are included in the e-mail or text list if you want timely notices.  You can contact Becky Edmondson at bjedmondson@kalex.kendal.org or (540) 458-3782 to be added to these lists.

Stay tuned for more interesting information about the construction project!
